Background

Golda Meir was the first female prime
minister of the state of Israel.
Her name is synonymous with
strength, fortitude, energy,
passion,  loyalty, vision.
One of the foremost figures of the 20th century,
Golda Meir worked tirelessly to bring the fledgling state of
Israel into being
and for another 25 years following she fought
to shape it and keep it safe.

Golda’s Balcony finds her at seventy-five
looking back over a life of service, joys, sorrows,
and great peril.  The play particularly
focuses on the Yom Kippur  War of 1973
when she was Prime Minister facing the
most wrenching decisions any leader can face.
William Gibson based his work on interviews
with Golda and those who, at the time of his research,
had survived the pain of birthing a  nation.

Mr. Gibson, author of
The Miracle Worker and Two for a Seesaw,
passed away in November 2008.

Golda Meir was brought to life before our very eyes.
Ms. Mangham’s portrayal was so effective and affecting that we
had the sensation that we had witnessed not a play,
but a guest lecture by the Prime Minister herself.

Gail’s portrayal of Golda is Riveting, Powerful, and Touching.
It makes you sit on the edge of your seat and forget to breathe.
She is Everywoman. She is a female king.  Bravo!

"This is the kind of theatre we need in Prescott,
and more of it!
I have not been a strong supporter of Israel.
Gail Mangham's superb portrayal of Golda
helped me to see the other side.
Theater is here not just to entertain,
but like all art forms, it is here to teach,
to cause us to think, and to help us understand.
Thank you for bringing this play
and this fine portrayal to Prescott.
Gail Mangham continues to dazzle.
She is such a gift to our community."

Micki Shelton, Playwright

My husband and I have just returned from a remarkable
performance of "Golda's Balcony"
staged at Temple B'rith Shalom.
This one woman show was written
by William Gibson (also author of "The Miracle Worker"),
based on interviews with the play's subject, Golda Meir,
and other witnesses to Israel's early days
as an embattled nation.

A beautifully written script balances the passion of
one woman's true calling with the perils of loyalty
to one's vision at all costs. Gail Mangham
animated the life of Mrs. Meir, Israel's first woman
Prime Minister, believably, touchingly and,
ultimately, profoundly.

Although survival often appears
to be life'sgreatest imperative
(and, as Golda says, "a synonym for 'Jewish'"),
the view from "Golda's Balcony" clearly  reveals
that peace is its greatest prize.
Thank you, Temple B'rith Shalom, for sharing
this treasure with the community.

And the mute gratitude of one woman with tears in her eyes
that trapped the words in her throat.
