Looking for Directors & Actors for The New Play Readings April 11 - 14, 2011 at Prescott College Call Gail at 928 771 2554 or Email gailmangham@yaoo.com Please note the following guidelines may be followed by Secondary Student Artists with one exception. They may submit Short Plays only. Each year, The Artist’s Path will explore a theme through a specific artistic discipline. For the inaugural event, taking placein April of 2011, The Artist’s Path will explore The Playwright’s Response to Conflict and Social Crisis. Three previously produced plays that deal with the theme will be offered to the public as full productions, while we seek out new works that have been or will be written in response to those pressing issues here and around the world that come under the rubric of terms like: peace, war, social justice, conflict, social crisis, and fundamental societal change whether those issues come from the past, the present, or some imagined future. New plays selected by the Jury Process will be presented as staged readings. There is no submission fee for The Artist’s Path new works program. Submission deadline for 2011- The Artist’s Path is October 1, 2010. • The new play must reflect the 2011 theme, The Playwright’s Response to Conflict and Social Crisis. • Must be a Short Play (10 to 60 minutes) or Full-Length Play (75 – 120 minutes) without a prior full production. (Please note whether your work is being submitted as a short or full-length play on the title page.) • Playwrights may submit up to two plays in each category. • Please include a cover letter of no more than one page describing the play’s developmental history and the playwright’s bio, with an emphasis on your history as a playwright, if any. • Submit 5 copies of your script, securely bound by brads, a three ring binder, a presentation folder or any other non- permanent binding system. Please do not send a script that has been spiral-bound. • Dramas, comedies and farces are all welcome. No musicals or plays for young people, please. • Cast size limited to 6. Submit doubling plan if the play has more than 6 roles. • Play readings may be conducted in a variety of spaces in Prescott AZ. • Providing playwrights with the highest quality actors is a priority. Plays that can be effectively cast within our market will be considered favorably. • All plays that are not selected for the festival will be recycled. Please do not include any type of return postage. Please check our website (www.theartistspath.org) by March 1, 2011 for announcement of current year's selections in Short and Full-Length categories. Selected plays will receive a rehearsed reading before the public at the April event. The reading committee and the public will decide a winner in The Short Play and The Full-Length Play categories. The winners will be announced at the closing ceremonies April 17, 2011 and a cash prize will be awarded. (At this time we plan $300 for the winning Short Play and $500 for the winning Full-Length Play.) The two winning scripts will be produced the following year. All serious submissions are read by at least two readers. Please note that the following are not considered acceptable submissions: • Screenplays or teleplays submitted as theatrical plays • Obvious first drafts • Plays with typos and spelling errors • Plays that are not formatted according to industry standards (see below) Play Formatting • Your name and contact information (phone number, address, and email) should appear on the title page of your manuscript but not within the body of the work. We will remove the title page from a work during the reading process to ensure an objective reading. Again please place Short Play or Full-Length Play on the title page. • A page number and Play Title should be included in the header area of each page following the Title page. This ensures that should a play become unbound it can be easily re-assembled. • A good entry will be one that gets passed around a lot, so make sure your script can stand up to the punishment. • Scripts will be accepted in any professional format, such as that described in Dramatists Sourcebook or as described below: • Top, bottom, left, and right, margins set at 1–1.5 inches. • Page numbers appear within the header area of each page. • Character names indented 4 inches. • Opening stage directions indented at least 1.5 inches. • Other stage directions indented 3.5 inches. • Text is best set at 12 point in one of the following fonts: Palatino, Times New Roman, Courier New, or Arial. • Please avoid the use of italics and excessive stage directions. • Five Copies Required Notification: We appreciate your offering our program the opportunity to consider your work. Our New Works Coordinator screens submissions for eligibility and for content as they are received and at that time acknowledges receipt of submission by email only. Please note that you must be an Arizona resident to submit. Only playwrights whose works are selected for presentation will be notified of selection. Plays selected for presentation will also be listed on our website at www.theartistspath.org. If you have not received notification of selection, see the website. It is our intent to post notification by March 1, 2011. Five Copies of the play should be sent to the address below.
